The Artist Behind the Stone

Born in Anandapuram, Thrissur in 1956, V. K. Rajan has dedicated more than four decades to exploring the expressive possibilities of granite, wood, bronze, and stone.

His sculptures combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary artistic vision, creating works that are both monumental and deeply human.

Alongside his artistic practice, Rajan has inspired generations of sculptors through teaching, public art projects, and participation in prestigious national and international sculpture symposiums.

From Learning to Mastery

V. K. Rajan’s artistic journey reflects a continuous pursuit of excellence. Beginning with traditional architectural studies, he later trained under some of India’s most respected sculptors, developing a unique artistic language that bridges heritage and contemporary sculpture.

1973–1974

Traditional Architecture (Wood)

College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram

Undergone informal studies in Traditional Architecture (Wood) at the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, where he developed a strong understanding of Kerala’s traditional craftsmanship and architectural heritage.

1975–1980

Formal Sculpture Studies

Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda

Studied sculpture under Kanayi Kunjiraman at the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, and continued his formal education at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda, where he refined his technical skills and sculptural vision under the mentorship of Raghav Kaneria.

1983–1985

Advanced Creative Sculpture

Under Raghav Kaneria

Pursued advanced creative sculpture studies under Raghav Kaneria, developing a distinctive contemporary sculptural language while expanding his artistic exploration of granite, wood, bronze, and stone.
